HENRY
Henry went through a full spectrum of emotions as the night went on. Guilt and shame married within him at first. How could he even have thought to agree to this? What kind of husband did that make him, allowing other men to take his wife? He had played at being a libertine while he spent time with Stokes and Dupree, but in truth, he hadnât gone in deep. He said the right things. He engaged in certain deviant behaviors, such as gambling and drinking, but he knew he was a far cry from qualifying for the label. He lacked the conviction to entertain time with harlots, male as well as female. He had a wife back at home; one that he adored, and he wouldnât ever do anything to hurt her. And somehow, he had done just that, in the worst way there was.
He watched as the two men began with Isabelle, holding her in place as they engaged their primal need. The urge to go to her rescue broke forth through his sense of disgrace, but honor held him in check. Henry had given his word to these fellows, and Isabelle had agreed to do this. It had not been against her will, he reminded himself. He had to see this through. That had been part of their agreement to resolve his debt. He had to remain in the room and watch them take his wife without any interference or even an utterance of a word. Henry felt it a fitting punishment for his sins.
Astonishment overtook all else within him as Henry realized that his sweet wife was enjoying their use of her. So much so, in fact, that she seemed to forget he was also present in the room. They had been wed long enough for him to recognize her reactions from time spent in the marriage bed. Worse, she reacted to being their plaything with more enthusiasm than she had ever shown for his performances. He should have been insulted or, at the very least, threatened. It was not unheard of for women of the age to take lovers so long as they were inconspicuous.
However, he felt no indignation. Isabelleâs revel in submitting to Stokes and Dupree, in turn, only stirred Henryâs blood. He noted the flush to her cheeks and the plumpness of her lips, which all made him desire to be involved. It was entirely out of the question, of course. He was bound by the terms of his debt, forced to watch and say nothing. When he had agreed to that, he had accepted the role as a penalty. Now, he felt it more a torture to stand by as he grew more and more flustered.
After Stokes had had his release upon Isabelle, the Englishman strode across the room to stand with Henry. A satisfied grin lingered on his face.
âPour us a brandy, would you?â he said, sweaty from his exertions. His blond hair had come loose from the ribbon heâd tied it in.
